BAGHDAD BOB MEETS BIBLE BOB:
The Former Iraqi Information Minister's New Career
ARLINGTON, VA (Lidless Eye News Service) -- In the waning days of the US-Iraqi War, pundits and journalists have been wondering what became of Saddam's Minister of Information, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, affectionately known as "Baghdad Bob."
Al-Sahaf, readers may recall, made quite a name for himself in the news media by denying that US and British forces were rapidly taking over Iraq, even as US troops had decimated the Republican guard, surrounded Baghdad, and were less than a few yards from Baghdad Bob’s office. Despite all evidence to the contrary, and even as US tanks could be heard in the background, Al-Sahaf claimed victory for Saddam to the very end.
Naturally, Baghdad Bob's bravura performances resulted in gales of laughter around the world, so much so that one pundit suggested that Al-Sahaf become a spokesman for the US auto industry while Democrats suggested that the Bush administration hire Al-Sahaf to promote its proposed tax cuts.
But it seems that the former Iraqi Information Minister beat them to the punch: Baghdad Bob may have found a kindred spirit in another Bob –namely, radical “traditionalist” apologist Robert “Bible Bob” Sungenis, who regularly makes claims stunningly similar to those broadcast by Al-Sahaf during the war:

I have detailed information about the geocentricity situation which completely proves that all the data which the NASA Infidels allege shows the earth rotating around the sun are illusions. They lie every day.
The same goes for all those Neo-Catholics who debate President Saddam --er, I mean, President Sungenis. They keep saying they have defeated President Sungenis in many debates on many issues. But they are all dogs who lie. God will roast their stomachs in Hell. In fact, they never debated President Sungenis at all. He just looked at them and they ran away in fear and confusion without uttering a word, just like the cowards they are.
But if they did debate him, they lied.
Lying is forbidden at CAI. President Sungenis will tolerate nothing but truthfulness as he is a man of great honor and integrity. Everyone is encouraged to speak freely of the truths evidenced in their eyes and hearts.
Now even the Neo-Catholic troops at EWTN, Envoy magazine, First Things, and Catholic Answers are all under siege. They keep saying they have us surrounded. They lie. We have them surrounded instead. We are winning, praise be to God.
We are hitting them from the north, east, south and west. We chase them here and we chase them there. They try to chase us back, but at the end we are the people who are laying siege to them. And it is not them who are besieging us.
The Vatican forces which were dropped there have been eliminated mostly on the field, except for those who fled ... It is a complete defeat ... Amazingly the Neo-Catholics have pushed the Vatican to do that. They pushed them ahead as if it is an experiment. The result was very tragic for the Vatican.
Their failure in this regard is abysmal. They want to tell the world that the earth revolves on its axis and rotates around the sun because that's what the Infidels of the world want to hear. But as a matter of fact, they do not respect the world. They want to tell these lies to all Catholics and to the whole public to keep them deceived. We will embroil them, confuse them and keep them in the quagmire. They have begun to tell more lies so that they might continue with the perpetration of their crimes.
But the next day, in two press releases, the SSPX's bishops retorted that no such plans were under way and that reconcilation with Rome was "impossible" until, in the words of SSPX Bishop Tissier de Mallerais, Rome "converts back to Catholic Tradition, back to the traditional Catholic Profession of Faith."
De Mallerais also claimed that this "rumor" was "thrown by Rome in an attempt to divide us."
Apparently this "bishop" --who most likely hasn't a shred of any evidence whatsoever to justify his assertion-- could not bring himself to muster enough graciousness and Catholic charity to merely say that the CWN report was inaccurate or that the rumor was based on a misunderstanding. Instead, in typical crytpo-Luther fashion (all one has to do read a cross-section of Luther's own replies to the Vatican to see what we mean), he has to atrribute the rumor --without presenting any proof-- to "Rome" and, even more disgracefully, ascribe the worst possible motives to "Rome." As if "Rome" had nothing better to do with its time and resources than engineer divisions within some penny-ante cult.
Perhaps, after trying since 1988 to reconcile the SSPX to the Church, it's time for Pope John Paul II to finally wash his hands of this bunch of ingrates and whiners so they can do what it seems they really want to do: Set up their own "church."
To paraphrase what one wag said about the necessity of France as an ally in the recent war in Iraq, continuing the Catholic Church without the SSPX is like going deer-hunting without an accordian.
One of the truly sad things about the SSPX schism is that while its current adherents believe they are Catholic, barring a miraculous return to communion with Rome, their grandchildren will know that they are not.
